[VIDEO] 8-Year-Old Impresses Teacher With Fluent English She Learnt On The Internet
She credits her good command of English to watching YouTube and TikTok videos.
A video of a Malaysian schoolgirl speaking fluent English with an American accent has been making its rounds on social media
In the video shared by the New Straits Times, the teacher behind the camera asks the student how she is able to speak English so well.
The little girl introduces herself as Hana from Kelas Dua Bahagia, and starts off by sharing about her family background.
"My mum works at Choco Albab, which is a company that makes chocolate, and my dad works at my grandfather's shop," she said.
The teacher then redirects the eight-year-old, curious as to how she is able to speak English so proficiently compared to her peers.
Hana agreed, replying, "I think that some of my friends don't know how to speak English very well, but some of my other friends know how to speak."
Hana then recounted how she got into learning English naturally by stumbling upon YouTube and TikTok videos
"So, basically, I started to learn English when I was five, because I watched the Internet more. I learnt English from YouTube and TikTok," she said.
"When I was little, I only knew Malay. Then, one day, while I was looking at random videos, I saw a video that was in English. So, I listened, listened, and listened, and started to learn the words.
"And then, after I got into this school, it was very easy to make new friends in English," she explained, adding that there are some foreign students in the other classes she could practise speaking the language with.
The teacher then thanked Hana for sharing her experience and asked Hana to come back whenever she could to show her how she uses social media to learn English.
