Frequent service delays across urban transit corridors have severely disrupted daily commutes for workers relying on public transport across the Klang Valley.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Finance Minister, announced a long-term overhaul strategy during the 2027 Budget tabling: Public transport operator Prasarana Malaysia Berhad will invest over RM3.4 billion to conduct a comprehensive restoration of its rail network.

The move aims to modernise existing infrastructure, upgrade signalling systems, and enhance overall fleet reliability across urban light rail and mass transit lines.

In a parallel initiative to expand regional passenger capacity, the Malaysian government will acquire 42 new train sets dedicated to the Electric Train Service (ETS) and KTM Komuter routes operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB)

The expansion is expected to significantly boost passenger handling capabilities and reduce waiting times on traffic-heavy intercity and suburban lines.
