1 Utama is making the mall more accessible to families with autistic individuals by introducing autism-friendly facilities

As part of their 'As I Am' initiative, the shopping mall has created dedicated spaces and activities designed to foster a welcoming and accessible environment for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

ASD is a developmental disability that affects how people communicate, interact with others, learn, and behave. It's a spectrum, meaning it affects everyone differently and to varying degrees.

Common characteristics include challenges with social communication, repetitive behaviours, and sensory sensitivities.

Located on the Second Floor (Oval Concourse), the Sensory Pod is a peaceful corner with two dedicated zones designed to provide respite from sensory overload

This quiet retreat is reserved for 1 Utama's As I Am members with sensory sensitivities, offering a calm and comfortable space to de-stress and recharge.

The Sensory Pod is open to individuals of all ages, ensuring that everyone can find a moment of peace within the bustling mall environment.

A play zone called Awan Play Space is equipped with multi-sensory tools and toys

These interactive spaces feature bright colours, soft textures, and playful activities designed to engage, entertain, and help children self-regulate.

After playing with a variety toys that cater to different sensory preferences, they can grab a book from the Reading Corner and curl up in the Blue Bean for a recharge.

A special Headphone Zone provides noise-cancelling headphones for those who need to reduce auditory stimulation.

Meanwhile, the Quiet Zone allows some quick shut-eye if sensory overload gets too overwhelming

With dim lighting, these cosy nooks offer comfortable bean bags and soft, owl-shaped tents where individuals can unwind and escape the noise.

In addition to these dedicated spaces, 1 Utama has transformed its Playtime Kids playground into an inclusive space for autistic children

Equipped with vibrant Sensory Walls featuring diverse tactile textures and visual elements, this playground caters to children of all abilities. The walls are adorned with interactive features such as a Communication Board with buttons representing different words and emotions for those who have difficulty expressing themselves effectively.

This simple yet powerful tool is a gamechanger, ensuring that everyone feels heard and supported.

To further enhance the experience for families with young children, 1 Utama also offers complimentary Sensory Kits containing sensory toys and tools, including a Pop It (coloured silicone tray with poppable bubbles) and visual cards.

The kits are exclusively for As I Am ONECARD Kids+ aged 12 and below. Here's how to sign up for As I Am memberships.
