And chances are, whenever you drink one of those drinks today, it brings you back to that comforting feeling you had as a kid.

The one thing that brings these drinks together? Chocolate malt.

What exactly is chocolate malt?

At its core, chocolate malt is a mix of two main elements: Cocoa and malted grains.

Malt comes from grains (usually barley) that have been soaked, allowed to germinate, and then dried. This process develops a naturally sweet, slightly nutty and toasted flavour.

So when you taste chocolate malt, you're basically getting:

  • Cocoa (for chocolate flavour)
  • Malted barley extract (for that deep, toasty, caramel-like note)
  • Sugar and milk solids (in most commercial versions)

Malt gives drinks a rounded, warm, and slightly "grainy" taste

That's also why it doesn't taste exactly like chocolate milk. It has more depth and a distinct roasted aroma. The malt adds a subtle savoury undertone that balances the sweetness, making it feel richer.

This also probably why chocolate malt tastes so comforting.

Plus, malt doesn't lose its character even when diluted with ice or milk, making it satisfying whether you drink it hot or cold.
