Women's underwear comes with plenty of little design details that we rarely stop to question, including that tiny bow that's often stitched onto the front

Whether it's a cheap multi-pack from the local supermarket or fancy, high-end lingerie, that little bow is almost always there.

If you're someone who usually snips it off because it shows through your tight dresses, you're not alone!

But as it turns out, this tiny detail isn't just a random fashion choice designed to make things look "cute".

There is actually a fascinating historical reason behind it.

Back in the day, women's underwear was held up very differently

We're talking about way before the invention of stretchy elastic waistbands.

According to historical records, before elastic was widely popularised in clothing in the early 1900s, underwear was often held up using a ribbon or drawstring. This string was threaded through the lace or eyelets at the top of the fabric.

To keep their undies from falling down, women would pull the drawstring tight and tie it off at the front.

And naturally, one of the simplest ways to secure the ends was with a bow.

So, the little bow we see on underwear today is thought to be a decorative remnant of that once-functional tie.

It also made it easier to tell which way was the front

Before stretchy waistbands and modern clothing labels, figuring out which way a garment went wasn't always as straightforward as it is today.

A small bow at the centre front could act as a handy visual or tactile marker, making it easier to identify the front of the underwear.

So if you were getting dressed in low light, you could simply feel for the bow and know which side was meant to go in front.

No accidentally putting your knickers on backwards required.

In other words, that tiny bow may have started out as something functional before eventually becoming a purely decorative detail.

And now, it's mostly just there because… it's cute

These days, the bow doesn't serve much of a practical purpose.

It's simply become a familiar design feature associated with women's underwear, much like lace, scalloped edges, and little decorative details.

Of course, not every pair of underwear has one, and modern designs can put bows anywhere or skip them entirely.

It's just a little leftover from the days when underwear was tied with ribbons, and somehow, it survived the transition to elastic waistbands.
