Royal Selangor Offers Pewter-Making Workshops So You Can Hammer Your Stress Into Souvenirs
Try your hand at pewtersmithing.
Looking for a unique and hands-on experience that'll really "shape" your next family outing?
Established in 2004, the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre offers an educational glimpse into pewter craftsmanship through interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and more.
The centre has regularly organised beginner-friendly pewter-making workshops for the past 20 years. Guided by expert instructors, you get to craft your own personalised souvenirs to take home. The "School of Hard Knocks" workshop is a 30-minute session that teaches you traditional pewtersmithing techniques
If you ever feel stressed, this is probably the perfect way to hammer out your frustrations! Using only a hammer and a few simple tools, you can engrave your name or initials on a slim sheet of pewter and shape it into a bowl.
For just RM80 per person, you'll take home your pewter dish, a special apron, and a certificate of achievement. This workshop is suitable for children under 12, provided they are accompanied by an adult.
Meanwhile, "The Foundry" workshop offers a more in-depth experience, letting you create a unique pewter accessory from scratch
Designed for those for aged 15 and above, this workshop costs RM180 per person. In just one hour, you can craft pewter accessories like keychains and pendants using moulds or a freehand design. You can go crazy with it — it's your creation!
Once you've decided on a shape, it's time to cast, polish, and decorate your handmade craft before taking it home.
Besides the workshops, you can watch expert pewtersmiths in action as they shape pewter and discover how this metal has been used throughout history
Browse through the museum section to learn about Tin Animal Money — which were animal-shaped tin currency used in the Malay Peninsula from the 15th to 18th centuries.
You get to learn about the unique properties and applications of pewter, listen to the distinct sounds of pewter chimes in the Chamber of Chimes, and feel various pewter textures in the Hall of Finishes.
Plus, don't miss the huge Petronas Twin Towers replica and the iconic Giant Tankard, which was officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest pewter tankard in the world!
You can plan your visit to the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre through its official website and even arrange for a free shuttle service to pick you up at various locations in KL
