With rising living costs and ongoing global supply challenges affecting countries around the world, many of us are becoming more conscious about our electricity usage at home
But being energy efficient doesn't mean you have to sit in the dark or stop using your favourite appliances altogether.
Instead, small daily habits can collectively help Malaysians reduce electricity usage, lower household expenses, and support the country's long-term energy sustainability goals

Wanna reduce your energy usage? Here are a few practical tips from the Energy Commission to help Malaysians be more energy efficient:
Aircon usage
- Set your aircon between 24°C to 26°C for more efficient cooling
- Clean aircon filters and dust regularly to maintain performance
- Service your aircon on time to avoid excessive power draw
- Consider using aircons with 4 or 5-star energy efficiency ratings

Lighting
- Let natural sunlight in during the day by using thin curtains or day curtains
- Use LED bulbs, which consume less electricity compared to conventional ones

General tips
- Switch off any unused switches whenever you leave home
- Switch off your appliances that aren't actively being used
- Make sure other appliances such as refrigerators, microwaves, and washing machines are properly maintained
Besides practising daily energy-saving habits, you can also save more on your electricity bills through the Time of Use (ToU) scheme
The scheme offers lower electricity rates during off-peak hours from 10pm to 2pm from Monday to Friday, and all-day on Saturday and Sunday, allowing you to potentially save around 5% to 10% on monthly electricity bills.
This means that running appliances that use high amounts of electricity like washing machines, dryers, or water heaters during off-peak hours could help reduce overall household electricity consumption.
Plus, consistently keeping your electricity usage lower can also give you extra incentives

According to the Energy Commission, if you're consuming 1,000kWh and below, you automatically qualify for Insentif Cekap Tenaga, which gives you rebates on your electricity bill.
Meanwhile, if you consume 600kWh and below monthly, you are exempted from fuel cost adjustments as well as SST and retail charges, which makes you less affected by fluctuations in global fuel prices.
