If your idea of a good café involves iced lattes, vinyl records spinning in the background, and the soothing sounds of a rainforest instead of city traffic, you might want to plan a trip out of KL
Tucked away within the hills of Janda Baik is Rasa Sentosa Café, a vinyl café that feels less like a typical hangout spot and more like a gentle escape into another world.

The café is part of Sentosa Janda Baik, a heritage estate that has been quietly preserved and passed down through generations
Today, the space is owned by Omar, who runs it together with his daughter, Merissa.
Based in KL, the duo continue to steward the estate with one clear intention: to honour its history while opening its doors to anyone looking to experience it in a more meaningful way.

The idea of a vinyl café wasn't just a trendy concept. It started with Merissa's long-time love for records.
"I've been collecting records since I was 14," she shared with SAYS.
"I always envisioned a space where music could bring people together, not just as sound, but as part of a shared atmosphere shaped by food, nature and a slower pace of being."
That vision now lives on through the café's carefully curated vinyl selections, from bossa nova and African jazz to Japanese jazz, Middle Eastern funk and soul, and even classic rock.
The music isn't random; it's meant to flow with the day.

Rasa Sentosa encourages you to slow down, whether it's flipping through records, strolling through the gardens, or simply sitting still and soaking it all in
As they put it, the space is designed so that "rather than a fast-paced, transactional environment, the café encourages a slower, more present way of spending time… it is less about just coming in for coffee, and more about experiencing a space that has been lived in, preserved, and shared."
Some of their must-tries on the menu include buttermilk chicken pasta, ayam geprek, soto ayam, pumpkin palm spice iced latte, iced rose matcha latte, and coconut cream salted caramel latte.

What really sets Rasa Sentosa apart is the way nature becomes part of the experience
The estate itself has been cultivated over decades, and as they shared, "What guests step into is not a designed landscape, but one that has been slowly cultivated and lived in over time".
That sense of time and care translates into the atmosphere. The sounds of water, wildlife, and rustling trees blend into the background, creating a space where "guests feel immersed in the space, rather than separate from it", the team shared.
"[We receive] a mix of both locals and travellers, and we welcome guests from all parts of the world," they said, reinforcing that openness to anyone who makes the journey.

In a world where cafés often chase trends and expansion, Rasa Sentosa takes a different approach
"We want it to continue being a space that people return to for a sense of calm and tranquility. A place that feels consistent, grounded, and quietly welcoming over time," they added.
Because sometimes, the best places aren't the ones trying to impress you, but the ones that gently invite you to slow down, stay a while, and come back when you need it.
