7 Simple Ways You Can Keep Your House Clean And Free Of Germs
Germs be gone!
Did you know that a neat and tidy house doesn't necessarily equate to a clean one?
We all regularly clean our homes, but it can be easy to overlook certain areas that we deem as unimportant. With the recent COVID-19 outbreak, it's now more important than ever to take extra measures in ridding our homes of germs as best we can.
1. Clean and disinfect less obvious germ spots
We all know how important it is to keep our toilets and kitchen clean, but there are lots of spots we often overlook that are teeming with germs. In particular, door handles, remote controls, light switches, and stair railings.
Using a solution of bleach (according to the bottle's instructions), wipe doorknobs, handles, and other hotspots, then rinse or wipe off and allow to air-dry. Alternatively, you could also use something like Clorox Disinfecting Wipes.
2. Spread your towels out to dry after use, and wash them regularly
It's normal to dump your damp towel on a rack, but it's important to ensure you spread it out properly and allow it dry quickly. Damp and warm places are germs' favourite breeding grounds.
In addition to that, you should never keep using the same bath towel for more than a week. So, make sure you wash it after two to three days.
Here's how to properly machine wash your towels with bleach:
1. Sort laundry by colour. Avoid bleaching wool, silk, mohair, leather, spandex, and non-fast colour.
2. Add one cup (250ml) of Clorox Bleach and detergent to a full load with wash water.
3. Add laundry.
For best results:
Use bleach dispenser if available or dilute a cup (250ml) of Clorox Bleach in four litres of water. Add to wash five minutes after the wash cycle has begun.
3. Soak and machine wash your kain buruk regularly, instead of just rinsing it under the tap
The kain buruk does not get the TLC that it so rightfully deserves. It's main purpose in every Malaysian household is wiping surfaces clean, especially when there are spills, crumbs, and other dirty areas.
Yet, many of us don't actually machine wash them regularly, making them a hotbed for germs! Soak your kain buruk in small bucket with diluted bleach solution at the end of the day.
An easy-to-make solution you can use is to dilute four tablespoons (60ml) of Clorox Bleach Original in two litres of water. Soak your kain buruk for five minutes, then rinse and let them air-dry. Plus, don't forget to put them in the washing machine at the end of the week!
4. Disinfect the taps and faucets as well as the sink once a week
You're already making sure your bathroom and kitchen sinks are well cleaned, but many often forget about the tap and faucet. If you think about it, the majority of the time your hands are dirty when you turn on the tap (because you wanna wash them), leaving lots of grime on that faucet.
Be sure to to give all the faucets a good scrub at least once a day. Additionally, disinfect your sinks, taps, and faucets with a bleach solution once a week.
5. Ceiling fans gather dust but we don't always notice because they're so high up, so make sure to wipe them regularly
Ceiling fans not only gather dust, they spread it throughout the day (and night) easily too.
You should be wiping the fan blades at least once a month. Dust it first, then wipe it with a wet, soapy rag, and finally wipe it again with a dry cloth.
6. Sanitise all your children's toys as often as they play with them
If you have young kids, you'll know how icky they can be! That's why it's always important to clean their toys regularly. Give their stuffed animals and machine wash-friendly toys a spin in the washing machine every month or so.
For all the plastic toys, it's important to sanitise them at least once a week or every two weeks, as these toys tend to harbour lots of germs.
Here's how:
1. Select toys that are washable. Avoid porous or stuffed toys.
2. Wipe toys with a wet sponge and set them aside for washing.
3. Mix half a cup of Clorox Bleach with four litres of water.
4. Soak washable, colourfast plastic toys in the solution for five minutes to sanitise them. Instead of soaking, you can also opt to scrub the toys for five minutes.
5. Rinse with water and let air-dry.
7. Scrub and disinfect your dustbins (it's gross but it's important!)
It's no secret that our dustbins are filled with germs, especially the one in the kitchen. Make sure you take out the trash at the end of the day, rather than keeping it overnight. Before putting in a new garbage bag, remove any lingering food particles and gunk, then give the dustbin a wipe using a disinfecting spray (such as Clorox Clean-Up Cleaner with Bleach) and paper towels.
Once a week, you should bring your dustbins out for a thorough wash and disinfection.
