Everyone Is Drooling Over The Yummy Kuih On Miss Universe Malaysia's National Costume
There's onde onde, kuih lapis, and even kuih talam!
Do you remember Miss Universe Malaysia 2017's nasi lemak-inspired dress?
Well, Malaysians sure love their food because this year, our Miss Universe Malaysia's costume features a whole Peranakan feast!
On Tuesday, 12 November, Miss Universe Malaysia 2019 Shweta Sekhon unveiled the beautiful, vibrant, elaborate dress that she will be wearing at the upcoming 68th Miss Universe competition.
The national costume and evening gown competition will be held in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States this coming 8 December.
Weighing a whopping 28kg, the costume even features Nyonya sweet treats like onde onde, kuih talam, and kuih lapis
Dubbed 'A Peranakan Indulgence', the mastermind behind the costume is 51-year-old Malaysian designer, Carven Ong.
According to New Straits Times, the designer said that he was inspired by the rich heritage of the Peranakan community and its bridal traditions.
The dress is mainly made out of songket, a fabric commonly worn by Malay royalty and couples on their wedding day. It is also decorated with intricate floral beadwork, mimicking the motifs usually seen on Nyonya batik.
Netizens absolutely love how bold and beautiful the national costume is
One person commented, "For the first time, this year's costume really amazed me! It's the best! I cannot wait to see Miss Universe 2019."
Another Facebook user said, "It is colourful and truly represents a culturally diverse Malaysia!"
"This is stunning! It's very Malaysian!" said another netizen.
Ong had also designed a stunning evening gown for Shweta to wear during the competition
Embellished with actual sea shells, the designer said that the golden hue of the dress pays tribute the sandy beaches of Malaysia.
We cannot get over how beautiful these dresses look. All the best, Shweta!
We're rooting for you!
