If your child is turning 12 soon, it's time to apply for their first MyKad

You'll want to make sure they register for their identity card within 30 days. Otherwise, you'll have to pay a RM10 late application fee.

While RM10 may not seem like much, it's an easy deadline to overlook, especially with school and other commitments.

The application is free as long as it is submitted within 30 days after the child's 12th birthday

After the 30-day period, a RM10 fee will be charged for applications submitted before the child turns 16.

If they only apply after turning 16, the application is treated as a late registration, and a separate late registration penalty will apply.

Here's what you'll need to bring

The child must be present when applying, and applications can be made at any National Registration Department (JPN) branch.

Parents or guardians should bring:

• The child's original birth certificate
• The parent or guardian's MyKad

What if your child was living overseas?

If your child is a Malaysian citizen who was living abroad and only returns to Malaysia after turning 12, there's no need to worry.

They can still apply for their MyKad within 30 days of returning to Malaysia without being charged any fee. After that grace period, the usual charges will apply.

So if your child has just turned 12 or is about to, it might be worth setting a reminder now to avoid an unnecessary trip and an extra RM10.
