In recent years, the government has introduced various initiatives to encourage Malaysians to embrace digital payments. While these programmes have evolved, looking back at past efforts provides context on how the nation began its journey toward becoming a cashless society.

The e-Tunai Rakyat initiative of 2020

Back in 2020, the government launched the e-Tunai Rakyat programme to accelerate the adoption of digital wallets among the public . This initiative, which was part of the 2020 Budget, provided eligible Malaysians aged 18 and above with a RM30 credit . To participate, citizens with an annual income of less than RM100,000 could claim the funds through selected e-wallet providers .

Expanding support for youth in 2021

Building on the momentum of earlier digital efforts, the government introduced the eBelia programme in 2021 . This initiative was designed to ease the financial burden on youth and full-time students at registered local higher education institutions . With a total allocation of RM300 million, eligible recipients were able to claim RM150 in e-wallet credits to be used for various online and offline transactions .

Encouraging digital adoption

These past programmes were part of a broader commitment to reduce barriers to digitalisation and improve financial inclusion across the country . By partnering with various e-wallet providers, the government aimed to create a more efficient ecosystem for both consumers and merchants . While these specific initiatives have concluded, they remain a significant part of the historical context regarding Malaysia's ongoing digital transformation .
