Here's A Look At How Iconic Childhood Snack Mamee Monster Has Evolved Over The Years
Let's take a walk down memory lane to the good ol' days!
Growing up, one of the simple joys of life was getting our hands on our favourite snacks
Remember how we used to shout and chase after the roti man on his bike to buy our favourite snacks? Or sneakily go to the kedai runcit with the little pocket money we had to chup some snacks and eat them while we watch our favourite cartoons on TV? Ahhhh, the good ol' days!
If you were a 90s kid, you probably also remember watching cartoons and having ads of snacks like Mamee Monster popping up on TV. And that's when the cravings would hit, and you'd pester your parents to get you a pack during their grocery tips, hehe.Nowadays though, things are so different. Gen Z kids now get their snack recommendations from watching mukbang videos on YouTube or scrolling on social media.
Nevertheless, whether you are a Gen Z or 90s kid, one thing's for sure. We all love and still can't get enough of the yummy, crunchy Mamee Monster snack!
While we're all familiar with Mamee Monster Noodle Snack, did you know this is how it used to look back in 1974? :O
The story of how Mamee Monster Noodle Snack was born goes back all the way to 1971 in Melaka. Initially known as 'Lucky', the company started off producing instant noodles and vermicelli.
One day, as Tan Sri Pang Tee Chew was passing by a rubber-tapping estate, he noticed some children were snacking on instant noodles straight out of the packet, without cooking them. This is when the big idea popped into his head and he ran back to his father, Datuk Pang Chin Hin, to share this great discovery.
Since then, this noodle snack has been one of Malaysia's favourite snacks to have, whether it's at birthday celebrations, school parties, or sleepovers.
During balik kampung road trips, confirm the big-size pack of Mamee Monster was on standby in the car, since the journey would be prolonged due to traffic. Even our parents would munch on the noodle snack with us!
And, of course, you'd definitely recognise this cute and cuddly Mamee Monster, a.k.a the famous mascot for this beloved childhood snack
Mamee Monster has gone through a few design iterations over the years, but its round red nose and furry blue body are iconic for every Malaysian kid.
Just like in this old Mamee Monster ad, most of us enjoyed crunching up the snack, adding the seasoning powder, and shaking them together in the packet, so that every bite would be well coated. And, it came in a variety of flavours like BBQ, Chicken, and Hot & Spicy.
The best part was when the packets had small surprises like cool stickers, 3D puzzles, and toys. It was such a joy to collect them and compare what we got with our friends!
This collectable toy, in particular, had images that would change when you tilted it in different directions. We found it so cool and were definitely mind-blown at how it worked when we were kids.
Anyone else obsessed with stickers during childhood? When smartphones and social media didn't exist, having a sticker book was one of the ways we made friends. How? By exchanging and comparing stickers with friends and acquaintances, of course.
The funny thing was that we would place a higher value on the stickers that were either metallic, puffy, or furry. Those were exchanged with two or more normal stickers. Way to go, sistem barter!
Now, Mamee Monster has evolved with new packaging along with some new flavours
As you can see, the Mamee Monster mascot has gotten a makeover and looks extra adorable now.
Just last year, they introduced Mamee Monster Black Pepper, which is a great pick for those who love a good kick of spice.
The noodle snack itself has pepper bits in it, and when paired with the seasoning, you'll get double the pepperiness to tickle your tastebuds.
With so many flavours to choose from, it's hard to settle on getting just one.
Want to relive those nostalgic Mamee Monster moments from your childhood? Well, good news — they're bringing back the limited edition retro packaging that most of us grew up with!
As a tribute to their late founder and executive chairman, Datuk Pang Chin Hin, Mamee Monster wants to spread the happiness we got during our younger days by bringing back their OG packaging.
Thanks to Datuk Pang, Malaysians have gotten the chance to create beautiful memories with his snacks. Starting from just a small factory in Melaka, now it produces more than 50 various products, including Corntoz and Mister Potato.
The comeback of the original packaging from the 1970s will surely get us reminiscing on memories we had with the iconic childhood snack. The old sketch-like 2D mascot is returning together with the packet's classic colours too.
