We Tried The Viral Boba Crabs And It's Actually Not As Gross As We'd Expected
In fact, it's the best out of the four dishes we tried.
A seafood restaurant in Cheras sent the Internet into a confused frenzy when it unveiled a bizarre dish combining crabs with brown sugar pearls in May
Not gonna lie, my initial reaction was, "Ew" followed by "Stop putting bubble tea pearls in things that are not bubble tea!"
Be that as it may, I was curious, especially after finding out that the restaurant also serves crabs in funky sauces and toppings like Oreo cheese, peanut butter, and tiramisu
So one fine evening after work, I decided to drag our SAYS Makan specialist Jay Zee on an hour-long drive to Cheras to try the aforementioned crab dishes... and here's what we thought about them:
1. Peanut Butter Crabs, cooked in a thick, savoury peanut butter sauce with a hint of curry and served in a pandan bread bowl
Samantha (S): I love the presentation, but in terms of practicality - I don't really see the point to this. Most of the sauce is pooled in the bread bowl or coating the hollow crab shells, so I have to "dismantle" the tower of crabs to dip my crab meat in. The sauce is good though, and the hint of curry is a nice touch.
Jay Zee (J): The bun is quite dry. I also think it would've been better if the bun's plain.
2. Oreo Cheese Crabs is literally what its name suggests
J: I thought this combo was gonna work, but it's... very weird? Soggy Oreo bits aside, it's like it can't decide whether it wants to be a sweet dish or a savoury one, instead of balancing out the flavours.
S: Yeah, I'm not a fan of this either. I'll just eat the crabs without the sauce. Maybe kids will like this coz got Oreos? I don't know.
3. Tiramisu Crabs, cooked in a sticky coffee sauce with a lot of cheese sprinkled on top
S: Okay, I don't like it. Is it supposed to taste like burnt three-in-one instant coffee?
J: What? I LIKE IT. Maybe it's 'coz I love "kam heong"; if you like kam heong, you'll probably like this coz you can't really taste the coffee. Out of the rest, this one is probably the closest to being "normal" hahaa.
4. Last but not least - Boba Crabs, cooked in a creamy peanut butter sauce then topped with crushed peanuts and generous amounts of boba
S: It's a combo that shouldn't work, but weirdly enough, it does! I can't stop eating the peanut butter sauce, it goes so well with the boba.
J: I love it and I low-key hate myself for it. Anyway, I don't think trying this is a huge risk, coz if you don't like the sauce then just eat the crabs lah. After you peel the crab, there's no more sauce already.
S: I think this is the best out of all four dishes. This is gonna be the only dish we're not tapao-ing home today.
