Police have arrested 12 people in connection with the alleged gang robbery of a Taiwanese YouTuber at his home in Cheras
According to the New Straits Times, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said police received a report from a Japanese man on 1 August regarding the incident.
The complainant, the Taiwanese content creator's employee, claimed that his employer was assaulted and robbed by a group of people allegedly impersonating police officers at his home in EkoCheras Service Residences.
"The victim sustained injuries and suffered financial losses estimated at RM35,000," Fadil said in a statement today, 12 August.
Police believe the suspects targeted the victim after learning that he kept a large amount of foreign currency at his residence
"This was believed to have been the initial trigger for the criminal act," Fadil said, as quoted by The Star.
Following the report, a special operation was launched by the Cheras district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Division together with the Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department.
All 12 suspects were arrested in separate operations across Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Kuala Lumpur
The suspects comprise eight men and four women, all Malaysian citizens aged between 26 and 48.
Seven suspects were released on police bail on 7 August after their statements were recorded, while the remaining five have been remanded until 13 August.
Police are also searching for another suspect who remains at large.
The case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant and Section 395 for gang robbery.
