12 UMT Students Who Allegedly Assaulted Fellow Student In Dorm Remanded For 4 Days
The group accused the victim of breaching "human norms" and allegedly choked, kicked, and punched the 20-year-old.
12 Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) students have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a fellow student at the university's male residential college
Kuala Terengganu acting police chief Wan Zaki Wan Ismail said the arrests were made after the victim's father lodged a police report claiming his 20-year-old son was assaulted on Sunday, 15 December.
According to Wan Zaki, the victim had called his father in Melaka to inform him of the alleged assault and shared several photos showing injuries on various parts of his body.
The victim's father arrived in Kuala Terengganu on Monday, 16 December, and took him to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for treatment. The student was subsequently admitted, reported FMT.
The group has since been remanded for four days
The 12 UMT students, aged 20 to 22, are under remand until Saturday, 21 December.
According to Terengganu police chief Khairi Khairuddin, they had accused the victim of breaching "human norms" and allegedly took turns to choke, kick, and punch the 20-year-old.
"The fight may have been caused by them accusing the victim of committing an activity that violates human norms, but I don't want to disclose what the accusations pertained to.
"For now, medical officers have confirmed that the victim did not suffer internal bleeding or broken bones. He only suffered bruises and he will continue to be monitored," he was quoted as saying.
However, earlier, Wan Zaki stated that the attending medical officer had confirmed the victim sustained bruises and internal injuries from blunt force trauma to his arms, waist, chest, abdomen, and leg.
Meanwhile, UMT has issued a statement confirming that a report regarding misconduct by its students had been filed with the police
The university said it would fully cooperate with the police in its investigation.
"As a public university, UMT is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students, and will not compromise on these values," read the statement.
