UPM Graduate Wins Prestigious Rhodes Scholarship To Pursue Studies In Oxford

He will be taking on two master's degrees at the University of Oxford in 2025.

A University Putra Malaysia (UPM) student has been awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford

Hoh Jia Da shared with SAYS that he received the exciting news via email while preparing to moderate a conference fireside chat in Bangkok.

"I had to contain my shock and excitement for the next few hours until the event was over and as soon as I could, I called my family and mentors to share the wonderful news.

"Overall, I was just feeling really grateful for this opportunity," he said.

Hoh said studying at Oxford had always been his dream, inspired by the institution’s academic excellence, diverse culture, and the Rhodes Scholarship connection.

"It's incredible to be surrounded by like-minded individuals from all over the world who share a passion for making a positive impact.

"I truly believe I can learn so much from them," he said when asked what inspired him to pursue higher education at Oxford.

The 24-year-old applied for the scholarship in August and reached out to Oxford and Rhodes alumni for insights into their experiences

When asked about his preparations, Hoh mentioned that he spent time researching the scholarship, exploring Oxford’s postgraduate courses that aligned with his personal and professional goals, and crafting his personal statement.

Hoh's motivation comes from his parents and siblings, who provided invaluable support throughout his journey

However, his primary drive stems from his desire to contribute more to society.

"I believe that to make a meaningful impact, you first need to sharpen your skills and broaden your understanding, and this scholarship provides the perfect way to do that," he remarked.

Meanwhile, Hoh shared his advice for other students aspiring to win a scholarship

"Don't be intimidated by the processjust apply!" he encouraged, stressing the importance of confidence and determination.

He also emphasised the importance of knowing what one hopes to achieve through the scholarship and how a postgraduate degree aligns with personal goals.

Hoh strives to become a social entrepreneur or policymaker in the tech industry, aiming to create transformative initiatives that leave a lasting positive legacy on society.
