Indonesia and Malaysia are among the countries with the lowest average daily step counts in the world, according to a global study by Stanford University

The study was cited by Facebook page Seasia Stats in a recent post, dubbing Indonesia and Malaysia among the least active countries at walking globally.

According to the post, Indonesian citizens record an average of 3,513 steps a day, placing them first among the least active, while Malaysians follow closely in third place with an average of 3,963 steps daily.

The list also includes Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, South Africa, Qatar, Brazil, India, Egypt, and Greece.

The extensive study, published in Nature in 2017, used smartphone data to track participants' steps over an average of 95 days

The research, which analysed data from over 717,000 people across 111 countries, found that residents of Hong Kong are the most active walkers in the world, logging an average of 6,880 steps per day.

According to Medical News Today, adults are encouraged to aim for 8,000 to 10,000 steps daily to maintain general fitness.

The researchers conducted the study to examine the link between a country's physical activity levels and obesity rates, noting that 5.3 million deaths annually are linked to physical inactivity

The study highlighted that the walkability of cities significantly increases activity across all demographics.

The researchers hoped that their findings would encourage polices to make cities more walkable and promote healthier lifestyles worldwide.

According to the 2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey, more than half of Malaysians are either overweight or obese:
