Three members of a family were killed after an Immigration Department truck crashed into them while allegedly running a red light at a junction in Kuala Lumpur today, 19 August

According to the New Straits Times, the incident occurred along Jalan Sultan Ismail at the Maju Junction traffic light intersection at about 1am today.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the accident involved an Isuzu truck belonging to the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Immigration Department, a Proton Saga, an Inokom Matrix, and four pedestrians.

Preliminary investigations found that the 43-year-old Immigration truck driver was en route from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Office to Chow Kit to pick up detainees following an operation targeting undocumented migrants.

Zamzuri said the truck is believed to have entered the crossroad while the traffic light was red, with its beacon lights and siren activated at the time.

The truck then crashed into a Proton Saga travelling straight through the junction when the traffic light was green for his lane. The 50-year-old Saga driver reportedly did not have enough time to avoid the Immigration truck.

The two vehicles collided in the middle of the junction, causing the truck to veer off course and hit four pedestrians, who were members of the same family.

"The truck also struck an Inokom Matrix driven by a 38-year-old man, ho had stopped at the intersection," said Zamzuri.

The deceased victims have been identified as a 53-year-old man and his two daughters, aged 25 and 12

The man's 55-year-old wife, who was also hit in the crash, was rushed to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment for injuries to her head, hand, and leg.

None of the drivers involved were injured.

The Immigration truck and Saga drivers were detained to assist in investigations.

Both subsequently passed breathalyser and urine tests, Zamzuri said.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

If convicted, the suspects could face up to 10 years in jail and a RM50,000 fine for a first-time offence.

Zamzuri said police had conducted an inspection at the scene, obtained CCTV footage, and were in the process of identifying independent witnesses.
