60-Year-Old Grandfather Becomes First Sarawakian To Conquer Mount Everest
Wong said it took him three years of preparation to take on the world's tallest peak.
At 60 years old, Wong Su Chung has achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first Sarawakian to ascend Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world
According to The Borneo Post, the avid mountain climber received a warm welcome and recognition from the Sarawak state government upon his return home to Miri on Saturday, 25 May.
Wong said it took him three years of preparation, tremendous mental strength, and daily prayers to succeed in scaling the mountain, which has an 8% fatality rate
“Every challenge could've turned nasty but giving up never crossed my mind as I was determined to reach the peak," he told the press at Miri Airport.
When asked how he felt upon reaching the summit, he said, "I felt very tired but my first thought was one of gratitude; I immediately thanked God Almighty for making it possible."
It took the climber 45 days to hike up to the peak and back to Kathmandu.
"Reaching the top is one thing, but coming down safely when the body is weary is another big challenge since that is when danger lurks.
"Nevertheless, I was careful in every move I made throughout the ascent and descent, keeping my family in mind the whole time," he said.
Among those giving him a hero's welcome at the airport were his wife, children, grandson, and other loved ones
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting was also present, and praised Wong for the incredible feat as a representative of the state.
"Wong is our hero and we are proud that he is the first Sarawakian to conquer Mount Everest, especially at 60 years old," said Ting.
