A total of 647 schools in Sarawak will be temporarily closed from 7 to 11 September following worsening haze conditions that have affected air quality across several areas in the state
In a statement today, 4 September, the Sarawak State Education Department said the closures involve 563 primary schools with 108,477 students and 84 secondary schools with 90,082 students.
The affected schools are under the supervision of these 12 District Education Offices (PPDs):
– PPD Kuching
– PPD Padawan
– PPD Bau
– PPD Lundu
– PPD Samarahan
– PPD Simunjan
– PPD Serian
– PPD Sri Aman
– PPD Lubok Antu
– PPD Kanowit
– PPD Julau
– PPD Meradong
During the closures, Home-Based Teaching and Learning (PdPR) will be conducted for students at the affected schools.
Meanwhile, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has consented to the declaration of a state of emergency throughout Serian, Sarawak, as haze conditions reach hazardous levels
At 2pm today, Serian recorded an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 521, which falls within the hazardous range.
In a statement, the Prime Minister's Office said the decision was made after taking into account the advice of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, as well as input from relevant agencies on the air quality in the affected area.
"More effective measures will be taken to protect the health and welfare of affected residents.
"The government will continue to monitor developments from time to time and ensure all necessary measures are implemented promptly, including mitigation efforts and the dissemination of information and health advice to the public," it said.
