A 46-year-old bakery owner in Selangor, who was found guilty of hiring 15 illegal immigrants, was sentenced to six months in jail

A court had pronounced the verdict against the man back in December 2017, according to Immigration Department director-general Mustafar Ali.

The man ran his bakery in USJ, Subang Jaya, and was among the 80% of employers who were charged in court for hiring illegal immigrants last year.

The bakery owner was also sentenced to one stroke of the rotan, becoming the first in Selangor to be given such a punishment

"This is the first case in Selangor," D-G Mustafar said.

He added that the man had 15 illegal immigrants working with him when he was busted by the department's enforcement officers back in July 2017.

Under Section 55B of the Immigration Act 1959/63, people found guilty of hiring a single illegal immigrant can be fined between RM10,000 and RM50,000 or a maximum one year in jail or both

Additionally, the severity of the punishment increases if a person hires more than five illegal immigrants at the same time. If found guilty, such a person can be jailed for six months to five years and can be whipped maximum of six times.

The Immigration Department D-G is hoping that this first case will serve as a deterrent to other employers from hiring illegal workers
