In an incident that happened earlier this month at Dataran Merdeka, a 34-year-old local taxi driver extorted money from his passenger

The passenger, a Burmese who was identified as Kyaw Kyaw and works as a cook, had hailed the taxi at Kota Raya and, upon arriving at Dataran Merdeka, was blackmailed by the taxi driver, who after stopping his taxi by the roadside, threatened the Myanmar national by saying "Do you want to go to the police station or the Immigration?"

He then ordered Kyaw Kyaw to hand over all his money (RM170) and dropped him off at a bus stop in Sentul. The incident happened at 12.30pm on 10 August.

The taxi driver, identified as M. Santharamohan, was later arrested on 23 August. Later on 25 August, the Magistrate's Court slapped an RM2,000 fine and sentenced him to three days jail time.

The RM2,000 fine is in default four months' jail time. His 3 days jail sentence began from the date of his arrest on 23 August, which means he will be out of the jail by today.

Santharamohan, who is a father of one, asked for leniency, as he had to take care of his pregnant wife along with his mother

His appeal seemed to have been accepted seeing his mere three days jail time as awarded by Magistrate Mahyudin Mohamad Som.

Santharamohan was represented by lawyer Sharen Rosli, while DPP Nur Farah Adilah Noordin appeared for the prosecution, Bernama reported.

In July, there were two separate incidents involving taxi drivers:
