A 20-year-old bridesmaid was left with severe, lifelong disabilities after a traditional wedding prank went wrong
On 4 October 2023, the victim, surnamed Zhang, had attended her friend's wedding in Henan, China when she took part in the traditional nuptial ceremony known as hun nao.
The practice was originally intended to ward off evil spirits and create a festive atmosphere. However, extreme incidents in recent years have drawn widespread criticism.
During the wedding, the groomsman Wang Moubing reportedly dragged her onto a bed and suggested tossing her into the air using a bedsheet.
While the group successfully caught her on the first toss, they dropped her during the second attempt.

Zhang spent 18 days in hospital being treated for a lumbar vertebral fracture and was later assessed as having a level nine disability.
She subsequently took the newlyweds and nine participants to court, seeking 270,000 yuan (RM163,000) in compensation, according to the South China Morning Post.
In July, the Ruyang County Court ordered the defendants to pay a total of 230,000 yuan (RM139,000)
The couple was ordered to cover 40% of the compensation, amounting to 90,000 yuan (RM54,000), for failing to halt the hazing.
Wang was ordered to pay 50,000 yuan (RM30,000), while the remaining eight were held jointly liable.
