A Chinese tourist visiting Kuala Lumpur on a business trip has sparked widespread online debate after confronting an employee over the absence of his country's national flag in his hotel

In social media footage that quickly circulated across local and international platforms, the tourist voiced his frustration upon seeing dozens of flags hanging from the ceiling of the breakfast dining area without noticing the Chinese five-starred red flag.

Engaging a female hotel worker who appeared caught off guard, the man insisted that businesses catering to Chinese clientele ought to display their national symbol

"If you want to earn money from Chinese people, please fly the national flag of China," he said while pressing the staff member for an immediate explanation.

The employee, struggling to understand the sudden line of questioning, could only offer a hesitant response before the video concluded.

However, sharp-eyed social media users quickly clarified that the hotel was not displaying a general collection of international flags

The decorations were themed around the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring only the 48 participating nations, a lineup that excluded both China and Malaysia.

Because the Chinese men's national football team failed to qualify for the tournament, its flag was intentionally omitted. Netizens were also quick to point out that Malaysia's own national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, was similarly absent from the dining hall display for the same reason.

The confrontation drew significant criticism online, with many commentators accusing the tourist of displaying an entitled attitude

Several users expressed concern that demanding special treatment in host countries contributes to the resentment Chinese travellers sometimes face abroad.

Conversely, some defenders suggested that his outburst stemmed from misdirected patriotism rather than malicious intent, though they maintained he should have inquired politely before making public accusations.

Currently ranked 91st in the world by FIFA, the Chinese men's national team has failed to reach the World Cup finals since its only appearance back in 2002
