A woman in Zhejiang, China, was duped after buying a 'durian' filled with a gel-like substance and a slice of potato from a roadside stall

According to China Press, the incident occurred last Thursday, 8 October, when the woman purchased the durian from a mobile roadside fruit stall while returning home from work.

She said the stall was selling durians for 19.8 yuan (about RM12.08) per kg, with the owner enthusiastically assuring her that the fruit would be "ripe and sweet".

When she asked the owner to open the durian for her, he refused, claiming that he did not have any plastic containers to put the fruit in.

He also repeatedly urged her to take it home and let it sit for a while before opening it.

Believing the owner, she bought a whole fruit for 38 yuan (RM23.18).

However, when she got home and excitedly opened the durian, she found a gel-like substance resembling playdough instead of durian pulps

In a video posted online, she showed a yellow, gel-like mass clinging to the durian husk, which she struggled to pull away.

At the centre of the sticky mass was a large piece of cooked potato.

After the video went viral, "synthetic durian" was trending on Weibo, with a repost of the video garnering over 2.5 million views.

The woman warned netizens to be wary, sharing her experience as a cautionary tale.
