Just 13 days before he fatally stabbed his 16-year-old schoolmate at a Bandar Utama school last year, the teenager assaulted his mother after she tried to check his school bag

According to a psychiatric report by Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta director and forensic consultant psychiatrist Dr Ian Lloyd Anthony, the boy pushed his mother, causing her to fall and hit her head.

The incident happened after she noticed that he had been wearing two layers of clothing to school and was carrying extra clothes and a cap in his bag.

Anthony said the boy, identified as L, was angry at his mother for trying to check the bag and was also upset about being forced to attend therapy.

"He was also angry at being forced to attend therapy," Ian Lloyd was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.

The details were contained in the 77-page grounds of judgment by Shah Alam High Court judge Adlin Abdul Majid, which was released today, 23 September.

The boy had already been struggling at school

The boy had been seeing a school counsellor after repeated complaints about him arriving late to school, sleeping in class, and having long hair. The counsellor later referred him for private therapy.

However, none of the four sessions was productive, with Anthony saying the boy remained guarded, uninterested, and suspicious throughout. He would also hide his face inside his T-shirt or behind his palms during the sessions.

The psychiatric report said his psychotic symptoms had evolved further by 2023. He became convinced that "he was being watched".

He believed his parents had installed cameras in his bedroom and bathroom, while also believing that the technician who installed the CCTV was remotely monitoring him. By early 2025, those beliefs had extended to his school.

He believed the school security guard and certain teachers were watching him through CCTV, and even thought cameras were monitoring him while he hid inside the school washroom.

"He believed cameras observed him even while he was hiding in the school washroom," Anthony said.

Anthony described these as paranoid delusions and delusions of reference.

His paranoia affected his daily routine

The report also linked his paranoid beliefs to his chronic lateness and reluctance to enter school. Each morning, he would remain in the car with his mother for another 20 to 30 minutes after his brother had gone into school.

He insisted that the car be parked away from the school entrance and would scan his surroundings for safety before getting out. He also avoided Monday assemblies by hiding in the male washroom, sometimes staying inside a cubicle for up to two hours before returning to class.

The report attributed this behaviour to paranoid and persecutory delusions.

The teenager was acquitted of murdering his schoolmate earlier this month, after the High Court found that he was of unsound mind at the time of the incident.

Adlin ordered him to be detained and treated at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak at the pleasure of the Sultan of Selangor.
