Domino's Malaysia Takes Action After Customer Leaves Islamophobic Message On Receipt
The pizza chain said it was deeply disappointed by the customer's "hurtful and disrespectful comment".
On Wednesday, 15 May, a customer placed an online order at a Domino's Pizza outlet in Penang. However, in the delivery instructions section, the customer left a message that allegedly mocked Islam.
A picture of the receipt went viral on social media, causing outrage.
"We are deeply disappointed that a customer made a hurtful and disrespectful comment when placing their order. We are also disappointed that one of our team members thought it was appropriate to share [the receipt] online, including the customer's personal information," Domino's Pizza Malaysia said.
The pizza chain said it has reported the incident to the police and intends to take appropriate action against both the customer and staff member involved, reported Malay Mail.
"We do not tolerate discrimination or aggression of any kind, whether directed at our team, our customers, or those in our community," Domino's Pizza Malaysia said, adding that the pizza chain has more than 3,000 staff working diligently to serve the Malaysian community.
Earlier, a photo of the receipt was circulated on X, formerly Twitter
Initially, many netizens believed that the cashier wrote the message on the receipt. However, Bayan Lepas assemblyperson Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz said he visited the Domino's outlet in question and discussed the matter with the pizza chain's northern region management and branch supervisor, Mohd Shukri Salem.
He stated in a Facebook post that many people, including himself initially, misunderstood the situation.
"In reality, the receipt that went viral was from an online order where the provocateur misused the 'remarks' section," Azrul explained, expressing hope that the individual responsible for the act would be arrested soon.
"The police have already launched an investigation, and I ask the public to remain calm and not be swayed by this provocation. Let's leave it to the authorities to handle the situation," he added.
Meanwhile, Southwest district police chief Supt Kamarul Rizal Jenal said the case is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code
"Our investigations found that an order received at about 3.03pm on 15 May through Domino's online order application contained words that insulted Islam under the remarks section of the order," he said, adding that the case is also being investigated under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act.
Section 298 of the Penal Code pertains to the deliberate intention of injuring the religious feelings of others. Upon conviction, it carries a penalty of up to one year in prison, a fine, or both.
Kamarul also urged the public not to speculate about the incident.
