Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has opened up about the lasting physical impact of a fall he suffered in January 2026, revealing that he has lost significant control over his leg

In a podcast snippet shared on Instagram on 14 April, the 100-year-old statesman detailed the circumstances of the injury and the difficult recovery process he has faced over the past few months.

The incident occurred while Dr Mahathir was performing his regular exercise routine at his residence in The Mines, according to Asia News Network.

He described a sudden loss of motor control, stating that his legs simply gave way before he collapsed. The fall resulted in a fracture of his hip bone and joint, as well as a head injury.

He recalled the intense physical distress following the accident, noting that medical officers found it challenging to manage his pain, which only began to subside after several days.

Dr Mahathir, who celebrated his centenary on 10 July 2025, was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur on 6 January following the mishap

Due to his advanced age, medical specialists determined that a surgical intervention was not a viable option. Instead, the former premier has been undergoing a rigorous course of physiotherapy to regain his mobility.

While the bone fractures have largely healed three months later, Dr Mahathir expressed frustration with his current physical state.

He noted that although he is now able to stand, he still lacks the neurological control required for normal movement.

He described the sensation as if his legs were no longer part of his body, stating, "It is as if I don't have legs".

This health update follows a series of brief hospitalisations for the former leader over the past year.
