People are encouraged to wear double face masks when in crowded public spaces or high-risk areas to prevent COVID-19 infections

The advisory was issued by the Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah today, 22 May.

Dr Noor Hisham, however, stated that double face masks are encouraged but not required.

According to him, double face masks were 95% effective in preventing infections and advised medical personnel or staff working in hospitals to wear three-ply or N95 face masks, instead of fabric ones.

This was stated by Senior Minister (security cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Ismail explained that it was an offence under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 or Act 342 if a person wearing a niqab does not have a face mask underneath if they are in a public place.
