Driver Who Ploughed Into A Serdang Hawker Center Has Been Arrested

A woman was killed and four others were injured in the incident last night, 18 November.

A Toyota Hilux driver who ploughed into the open-air dining area of a hawker center in Serdang was arrested earlier today, 19 November

The Malaysian Insight reported Serdang police chief Ismadi Borhan as saying that the driver was arrested at 1.43am today. 

According to Ismadi, the Toyota Hilux involved in the incident was found abandoned near Taman Universiti Indah, a few kilometers away from the scene.

At around 8.15pm last night, the driver ploughed into four people in total

Sin Chew Daily reported that the driver first drove into the hawker center, killing a 57-year-old woman and injuring three, before speeding off and hitting another person

The deceased and injured were taken to Serdang Hospital.

Ismadi confirmed that three other vehicles were hit by the Hilux – a Perodua Myvi, a Perodua Bezza, and a Lexus. 

A witness told Sin Chew Daily that after the fourth person was injured by the driver, members of the public attempted to stop the car and pull the driver out but to no avail.

The incident is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving

Ismadi confirmed that the suspect will be remanded today. 

"His urine tested negative for drugs but we have taken his blood sample to gauge his level of alcohol," he told The Star

The Serdang police chief has also denied claims that the incident was an act of terrorism, according to Sin Chew Daily.
