Fearless Elderly SG Man Saves Wife And Cat From Apartment Fire
Despite having a limp, the 61-year-old only thought of saving his wife and their cat from the fire.
A fire recently broke out in a one-bedroom apartment unit on Woodlands Street 81 in Singapore, which was home to a 61-year-old elderly man, his wife, and their cat
According to The Star, at 2am on Monday, 19 December, the fire broke out in the apartment of Abdul Hamzah Midi, while he was in the corridor on the fifth floor, outside the unit.
Upon realising his unit was on fire, the 61-year-old rushed in to save his wife, 56-year-old Siti Aminah Khamis, and their cat, who were both in the kitchen.
The couple, along with their cat, escaped from the burning unit, unscathed.
"At first, I thought I could hide in the toilet, but luckily I didn't because the fire got larger and engulfed the whole flat," Siti said.
Despite having a limp in his step, Abdul said that he didn't care if he was scared of the fire and only wanted to save his family. "It was scary but I didn’t care because my wife was inside. I had to save her and the cat," he told reporters.
Over 100 residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure
Three people were taken to the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for smoke inhalation.
The Singapore housing board has obtained a temporary home for the couple at Block 180C Marsiling Road.
The fire was said to have been caused by a defective battery of a personal mobility aid (PMA) in the living room
According to Siti, her son had bought the PMA battery through a digital commerce application.
The battery had emitted a strange 'clicking' sound before catching fire.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that the battery was already expired and defective when it was sold to Siti's son.
