Fitness Coach Dies After Collapsing During HYROX Bangkok

The gym owner's family said the circumstances surrounding his death were still not fully understood.

A Thailand-based fitness coach has died after collapsing during the HYROX race in Bangkok on Thursday, 13 August

According to the Bangkok Post, Leroy Saunders, 41, from South Africa, was taken to hospital after losing consciousness during the event at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

According to the gym owner's family, the circumstances surrounding his death were still not fully understood.

His family and team have asked HYROX and the media to refrain from commenting until they have a clearer understanding of what happened.

"What we can share without doubt is that until the last second of this moment, Leroy lived his life without regret or hesitation and impacted hundreds if not thousands to do the same throughout his journey," read a statement posted on his Instagram account yesterday, 18 August.

"We are aware everyone would like closure and a better understanding, and we are working hard to be able to offer this when the time is right," it added.

Saunders was the owner of IAOT CrossFit in Bangkok and was known for his strength and conditioning work with combat athletes

He also founded Fight by Design, a physical training programme for Muay Thai fighters, MMA athletes, and boxers.

Following news of his death, many of Saunders' clients, friends, and followers have taken to his Instagram page to pay tribute to him.

As of publication, HYROX Thailand has not issued an official public statement regarding the incident or Saunders' death.
