In a major shift under the 2025 Budget, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced plans to make Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions mandatory for all foreign workers in Malaysia

This move is part of the government's commitment to ensuring fair treatment for all workers, regardless of nationality, in line with international labor standards, according to Anwar.

The policy, which will be rolled out in phases, aims to provide better social protection for non-citizen workers, ensuring they, too, benefit from retirement savings while working in Malaysia.

Details on the implementation timeline are expected to be announced in the coming months.

At the same time, Anwar said that EPF is reviewing its current schemes to introduce an intergenerational transfer feature

This would allow members to transfer a portion of their EPF savings directly into the accounts of close family members, strengthening support within families as Malaysia heads toward becoming an ageing nation.
