A Form 5 student in Penang has been hospitalised with an injury to his right eye, allegedly after he was caned by a teacher in school

According to Harian Metro, the student's father, Mazni Mohamad, claimed the incident happened during his son's Science class around 12.30pm on Thursday, 14 September.

The 17-year-old student from a school in Sungai Ara, George Town, was reportedly being reprimanded for vaping in class.

"[After he was caught] my son was brought to see another teacher with the title of ustaz, who is said to be the assistant discipline teacher, and he was interrogated and accused of lying," the father told the Malay daily.

"The teacher started to cane him, but the cane accidentally hit my son's right eye, which caused the bleeding," he claimed.

Mazni said when the school staff realised the obvious bruising, they quickly sent his son to a clinic, then to Balik Pulau Hospital (HBP)

"As I understand, the hospital then had to refer my son to Penang General Hospital because there are no eye specialists in HBP," he said.

The father added that his son's condition is stable, but he had to be admitted for monitoring for five days before the doctors decide on further treatment.

The parent said he would be filing a police report on the incident before meeting the school administration with his wife for an explanation

"I know my son is mischievous, but this is not a way to teach a lesson. Luckily, he didn't go blind," he said.
