The government will separate the roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor

This was announced during the tabling of the Belanjawan 2026 today, 10 October.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government is currently engaging with all relevant stakeholders on the matter.

If implemented, this reform would be crucial, as combining both roles under a single individual creates an inherent conflict of interest, undermining the rule of law and eroding public confidence in the justice system.

Earlier this week, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said announced that the government will decide whether the Attorney General should continue to hold a government position following the planned separation of powers, reported The Edge.
