Ipoh Town Hall will be repurposed as a performing arts centre

Known affectionately as the 'Taj Mahal of Ipoh', this pristine white colonial-style building is an iconic landmark in Ipoh, Perak. Constructed in 1916, the building was originally used as the main administrative office in Ipoh and as a post office.

According to Bernama, the Ipoh City Council (MBI) is spearheading the renovation of heritage buildings, including Ipoh Town Hall, under Package 2 of the Ipoh Heritage Tourism (IHT) initiative to preserve the city's cultural history.

The renovation cost of over RM11 million is being funded by the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority, with conservation work completed on 20 May 2024.

The building is expected to open to the public early next year.

Once the performing arts centre is ready, visitors can expect concerts, cultural events, and theatre performances to be held in the restored Ipoh Town Hall building

Meanwhile, the old post office located at the back of the building will be refurbished into an art gallery. The art gallery will function as a hub for collecting and displaying visual art collections, including paintings, sculptures, and more works from abroad.

Prior to this announcement, the 108-year-old building served as a community hall and a function space for weddings and public events.

Those staying at accommodation service providers in Perak will soon need to pay a RM3 fee:
