A police officer was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court today, 22 November, for stealing jewellery from a 26-year-old woman who died of a heart attack in a locked car in Setapak last month

The accused, Lance Corporal Mohd Alifah Mohd Sapie, 35, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read before Magistrate M S Arunjothy, reported the New Straits Times.

According to the charge, Mohd Alifah is alleged to have stolen a necklace and bracelet belonging to the deceased, Nur Farhana Nisha Syazwan, at 2.30am on 1 October near Prima Setapak, Wangsa Maju.

The offence falls under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

He was granted bail of RM3,500 with one surety

While deputy public prosecutor Vivi'Asnita Zaina’Larifin requested the court to deny bail, citing the non-bailable nature of the offence, Mohd Alifah's lawyer, Lavinia Raj, appealed for leniency, emphasising her client's financial struggles and family responsibilities that include providing for his five children.

"My client is a Lance Corporal earning only RM2,500 per month. If a high bail is set, the accused will face difficulties in supporting his family," she said.

The court fixed 22 January for the next mention of the case.

Earlier, the victim's father, Syazwan Abdullah, 59, had lodged a police report regarding the disappearance of his daughter's jewellery:
