MACC Discovers RM5 Million Bribe In Foreign Currency In Opposition Politician's Safe House
The politician is said to have once wielded significant political influence in Selangor.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has discovered RM5 million in foreign currency in a safe house linked to an opposition politician who once held substantial political sway in Selangor
According to the New Straits Times, the discovery was made when graft-busters raided a property in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday, 12 October, as part of an investigation into a multi-million ringgit corruption scandal involving Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI).
MBI, the investment arm of the Selangor state government, is involved in water management, property, river conservation, mining, and education, among others. The ongoing probe centres on mining concessions.
It is alleged that SGD1,529,000 (about RM5 million) was stored in the politician's safe house to fund his political activities, an MACC source told Bernama.
Two suspects, a former MBI senior executive and businessman, have been arrested so far
The MACC source revealed that the former MBI senior executive led investigators to the politician's safe house, which is an apartment unit rented by the businessman.
"The money is believed to have been given by an unknown individual and was kept by the businessman on the orders of the politician," the New Straits Times quoted the source as saying.
MACC is currently investigating whether the prominent politician had any involvement in the alleged corruption, reported Malaysiakini.
"We will see if there is a need to record his statement," a source said.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests and seizure when contacted, but declined to provide further details.
The case is being probed under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009 for accepting bribes.
