A Malaysian diving instructor has gone viral on Threads after sharing a video of about 100 to 150 whales swimming near Pulau Tioman, Pahang, on Saturday, 12 July
In the 44-second video, Irwan Ismail, the founder of Sorte Met Stella Travel and Tours, described the sighting as a rare encounter due to the sheer size of the pod.
"There were an estimated 100 to 150 of them, stretching as far as the eye could see," he said.
In an Instagram post, Irwan said he believes the whales are short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus).
The diving centre founder also said his video captured the whales' vocalisations, making the encounter even more memorable.
"Pilot whales are highly social members of the dolphin family and are known to travel in large, close-knit pods.
"Encounters of this scale are truly rare and a powerful reminder of the rich marine biodiversity surrounding Tioman Island," he wrote.
At the time of writing, Irwan's video has garnered over 2,200 likes
"Amazing, it's a rare sight," commented a netizen, while another added, "They are all so beautiful!"
"I go to Pulau Tioman every year, but I don't have the luck to meet them," one Threads user said.
