A 23-year-old man in China has regained a normal scalp after living with a rare medical condition that caused his head to resemble the folds of a human brain

The patient, surnamed Li, suffered from cutis verticis gyrata, a rare condition that causes the scalp to thicken and develop thick folds without affecting a person's overall physical health.

According to the South China Morning Post, by the time he was 14 years old, the condition had covered half his head, leaving him with severe psychological distress and scarring from an earlier failed treatment.

Dr Zhou Wei and his team at the Plastic Surgery Department of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University took on the case, devising a careful plan to utilise Li's remaining healthy skin

In July last year, surgeons implanted expanders under healthy parts of his scalp, periodically injecting fluid over 11 months to gradually stretch the normal skin tissue.

The team recently completed a successful three-hour operation to remove the abnormal tissue and repair the area, allowing Li's scalp to grow hair normally once again.

The successful outcome drew heartwarming reactions online

Many netizens commended the surgical team for giving Li a renewed sense of confidence.

"This is the true essence of plastic surgery, helping individuals heal from medical issues rather than merely enhancing aesthetics," remarked one observer.
