A 29-year-old medical assistant at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) was slapped in the face on 25 May while attending to an accident victim

New Straits Times reported that the medical assistant, who wishes to be known as Umair, had just wheeled an accident victim into the yellow zone of HKL's Emergency Department when the incident occurred.

Umair was assaulted at around 3am on Saturday, 25 May.

The medical assistant was slapped by a man believed to be a relative or friend of the accident victim who was being attended to

The man initially approached the emergency department's counter and caused a commotion, accusing Umair and his team of delaying treatment for an accident victim at a crash on Jalan Datuk Senu, Sentul.

"(The man) was apparently unhappy with our services and disputed our action in not leaving the accident scene immediately after carrying the victim into the ambulance," Umair was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.

"I tried to calm the situation by escorting him out but ended up being slapped instead," Umair added.

Sinar Harian reported that the man appeared to have followed the ambulance to the hospital before causing a commotion

"(He was) knocking on the back door of the ambulance aggressively," the medical assistant revealed.

Umair refuted the man's accusations through an explanation of what his team did at the scene of the crash in Sentul

According to New Straits Times, Umair and his colleague administered first aid on the victim before lifting him into the ambulance. The victim was suffering from head and leg injuries.

"The ambulance did not move immediately because we were conducting a secondary procedure on the victim including inserting a drip since the victim appeared to be losing a lot of blood. For the patient's safety, the ambulance can only move once this procedure is done," Umair revealed.

However, the procedure was interrupted by the man who was at the scene of the accident.

"(The man) came over and started hitting the ambulance's rear door aggressively, asking us to take the victim to the hospital immediately," Umair said.

The same man then followed the ambulance to HKL before slapping Umair at the Emergency Department.

The incident caught the attention of Datuk Dr. Alzamani Mohammad Idrose, who is a consultant emergency physician at HKL

"I am always impressed by my frontline staff. No matter how many times they have to face rude situations or harsh comments, they will show up to work and continue doing their jobs the next day," Alzamani wrote in a viral Facebook post

"With all the proof we have, we will leave it to the police to conduct an investigation," he added.

Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Fahmi Visuvanathan confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
