The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has deployed a K9 Unit at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2 as part of stepped-up security patrols

According to the New Straits Times, the move follows several recent security incidents at the airport.

The patrols will focus on the kerbside areas at the arrival and departure levels, particularly during peak hours.

The dogs will not be deployed around the clock

KLIA police chief ACP M Ravi said the dogs would only be deployed during selected hours as they need time to rest.

"The deployment is not 24 hours a day because the dogs also need rest. We have to identify peak hours and deploy them at appropriate times," he said.

Ravi added that the patrols would take into account airport users' sensitivities, with the dogs and their handlers operating mainly outside the terminal, particularly around the entrances.

AKPS also said the deployment was part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen airport security while ensuring public comfort.

"Our priority remains on aspects of safety, cleanliness, and public comfort. The operators will ensure that the management of the K9 Unit is always well-organised and controlled throughout the deployment," it said.
