The Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) has teamed up with six animal welfare NGOs in a joint effort to humanely manage the stray dog population in the state
In a statement today, 4 August, MBMB said it carried out a three-day joint operation from 28 to 31 July to help capture and rehome stray dogs within the council's jurisdiction.
A total of 20 dogs were successfully rescued using fencing and net capture techniques
MBMB mayor Datuk Shadan Othman said the NGOs were brought in to ensure the operation was carried out humanely and to help facilitate their adoption after they were rescued
Following the operation, all 20 dogs were taken to animal shelters run by the participating NGOs, where they will receive care before being put up for adoption.
According to The Star, Shadan said the operation was launched in response to the increasing number of stray dogs in Melaka, which requires a coordinated effort between local authorities and animal welfare organisations to manage.
He added that MBMB will continue strengthening its collaboration with NGOs to better control the stray dog population while prioritising public safety, public order, and animal welfare.
