The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has not euthanised any dogs since adopting the humane trap-neuter-release (TNR) approach to control the stray population

In a Facebook post last Friday, 22 May, the city council said it will continue addressing the issue of stray and abandoned dogs in a sustainable and humane manner following the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MBPP and International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) Penang.

Since the TNR approach was adopted in 2017, MBPP and IAPWA Penang have neutered 8,484 dogs.

The renewed MoU will see the effort continue over the next five years as part of ongoing measures to manage the abandoned dog population.

The MoU signing ceremony last week also saw around RM300,000 in contributions towards the cause

MBPP mayor Datuk A Rajendran said the council will allocate RM100,000 to the programme.

Meanwhile, Datuk Chuah Choon Bin of Pentamaster Corporation Bhd and Koay Lin Lin of Greatech Technology Bhd each donated RM100,000 to IAPWA.

"City councillor Tan Soo Siang also contributed RM5,000 as a gesture of support for this noble effort," a statement read.

According to Malay Mail, IAPWA Penang president Choong Koon Yean said the NGO spends about RM60,000 to RM70,000 to run the TNR programme each month.

Since 2017, the organisation has raised more than RM5 million to support its efforts in managing Penang's stray animal population.
