The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has urged Malaysians to stay vigilant as the 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon is expected to begin today, 27 October

According to METMalaysia, the monsoon season is expected to last until March 2027, bringing periods of continuous heavy rain, potential flooding, and rough seas before rainfall decreases early next year.

METMalaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said three to five episodes of continuous heavy rain are expected during the early phase of the monsoon, between November 2026 and January 2027.

Six states are forecast to experience continuous heavy rain during the early phase

The affected states are Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak.

METMalaysia said continuous heavy rain could occur when strong monsoon surges coincide with low-pressure weather systems.

The prolonged rainfall could trigger floods, particularly in low-lying areas and locations near rivers.

Strong winds may also cause rough seas and rising sea levels in the South China Sea, increasing the risk of flooding, especially when heavy rain coincides with high tides.

During the later phase of the monsoon, from January to March 2027, rainfall is expected to decrease

The drier conditions could bring hotter weather and increase the potential for heatwaves, particularly in northern Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.

METMalaysia also highlighted the ongoing Super El Niño phenomenon as a factor amid concerns over more extreme heat.

With the Northeast Monsoon approaching, METMalaysia has advised the public to prepare for the changing weather conditions

Members of the public are encouraged to:
– Stay updated on the latest weather information, advisories, and warnings issued by METMalaysia
– Remain alert to possible flooding, particularly if they live in low-lying areas or near rivers
– Follow instructions from the authorities and evacuate immediately to temporary relief centres (PPS) if directed to do so

The public is also advised to prioritise their health and safety throughout the monsoon season.
