Federal Territories Minister Demands Explanation Behind The Naming Of Jalan Palestin
Annuar said that the original name of Jalan Raja Laut 1 should remain.
Minister of Federal Territories Annuar Musa is demanding an explanation behind the recent renaming of Jalan Raja Laut 1 in Kuala Lumpur
According to Harian Metro, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) announced the name change on Sunday, 27 September.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said that the idea to change the name of the street came up last year during the International Quds Day peaceful assembly which was held at the DBKL Square in May 2020.
According to the minister, his issue with the renaming is that it replaced a historical aspect of Kuala Lumpur
In a tweet, Annuar said, "I have no objections to naming a road in Kuala Lumpur as Jalan Palestin as a sign of support for the struggle to free Al-Quds."
"But I want an explanation on why Jalan Raja Laut was chosen as it is an important name in the history of Malays and KL."
Besides that, he also argued that Jalan Palestin should have replaced roads with English names in Kuala Lumpur
"Why not change the roads with an English name such as Jalan Stonor, Jalan Conlay, Cochrane Road and others?" he said.
Today, 28 September, he tweeted, "The Mayor will find a different road to be named Jalan Palestine. Jalan Raja Laut 1 should remain as before."
DBKL falls under Annuar's ministry and there has yet to be an official announcement from them in regards to the minister's statement.
