The story of a mother who raised five successful children while working as a street cleaner has caught the attention of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, 18 August, Anwar said he was touched by M Kavita's story, noting that she had braved the heat and rain for over 12 years while working as a cleaner to raise her children.
Kavita's story first captured public attention after a video of her birthday surprise went viral online.
Her children had spent about a month planning the surprise before showing up while she was working in Seremban.
Kavita, who thought she was being interviewed during her usual duties, shared that her years of hard work have paid off, as her children had gone on to build successful careers in their respective fields.
She said her four daughters work as a pilot, a cabin crew member, a high school teacher, and a nurse, while her son works with her.
When she was asked to turn around in the interview, Kavita broke down in tears of joy after seeing her children wishing her a happy 50th birthday and embracing her.
Although her children are now grown, Kavita said she continues to work by choice because she is independent and does not want to burden them
To recognise Kavita's contribution, SWCorp Malaysia presented her with a Special Award at its Cleaners' Appreciation Day on Wednesday, 18 August, reported Bernama.
Anwar said Kavita's story had touched him and took the opportunity to thank all sanitation workers for their service.
"May Kavita and all sanitation workers continue to be granted the strength, health, and respect they rightfully deserve. Thank you for all your service and hard work in maintaining the cleanliness and well-being of us all," Anwar said.
