Malaysians travelling between Penang island and Butterworth can enjoy free ferry rides this Sunday, 8 November, in conjunction with Deepavali
In a statement today, 5 November, the Penang Port Commission (PPC) and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) announced that the free service would be available exclusively to Malaysian citizens.
The free rides will be offered for journeys from both ferry terminals: Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal in Butterworth and Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal in George Town.
PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the service would operate according to the latest ferry timetable and advised the public to plan their journeys in advance.

Last year, 7,780 pedestrian passengers and 1,518 two-wheeled vehicles used the Penang Ferry during Deepavali
Meanwhile, the ferry service recorded a 5.61% increase in overall passenger numbers between January and September this year compared with the same period in 2025.
Yeoh said the free ferry initiative reflects PPC and PPSB's continued efforts to facilitate public travel during festive seasons while helping to ease traffic congestion in Penang.
