Over the weekend, Penang police arrested a couple after discovering a homemade improvised explosive device (IED) in their apartment located at Taman Pandan in Butterworth

According to Bernama, North Seberang Perai police chief ACP Mohd Asri Shafie stated that at 1.05pm on Sunday, 8 October, a woman notified the police about the discovery of a parcel believed to contain explosives.

Following the tip, a bomb disposal team, forensic experts, and the K9 dog unit were swiftly dispatched to the site.

Mohd said that, as they arrived at the location, another witness reported that there was an explosion in front of a house.

Further police investigations conclusively determined that the package, in fact, contained an IED.

"Following the exposé, the North Seberang Perai Criminal Investigation Department detained a man and a foreign woman who were housemates, at about 8.30pm in the Taman Pandan flats area," Bernama quoted Mohd as saying.
